Christmas Treats That Are Good For You
For me, Christmas is all about tradition, family and childhood nostalgia. I really enjoy this time of year when I get to relive some of my most favourite memories as an adult. Christmas is also when I allow myself to indulge in the foods that I don’t normally eat but still enjoy! Eating really well 95% of the time allows me to indulge a bit now and again without too much consequence.
To keep holiday weight gain to a minimum and gastrointestinal issues at bay, see my previous blog for helpful tips to follow throughout Christmas. But, here are a few goodies you can add to your mix that aren’t as rich or sweet but still just as good.
Raw Brownies: These brownies use dates, nuts and cocoa. You can to top it with anything you like, super good for you because they are naturally sweetened and raw, what more can you want!
Millionaires Bar: These bars use dates and almond butter instead of caramel and the base is a combo of almond meal and coconut flour instead of white flour with no nutrients. They are sweetened with maple syrup and dark chocolate. They are a good substitute for overly sweet bars you find on the cookie platter.
Sarah’s Granola: Not exactly a “treat” but a really nice and healthy breakfast. You can Christmas-ize (not a word I know) it with cranberries and pistachios and a a dash of nutmeg. Pair this with a nice yogurt, dairy (organic hopefully) or non and some fruit for a wholesome breakfast that won’t send your blood sugar through the roof.
I hope you enjoy these recipes as much as I do and feel free to share your healthier versions of Christmas goodies!
I want to wish everyone a very Merry, Happy and Healthy Christmas.
I know we are all celebrating this year differently than we have in the past but as my sweet sweet Gramma Shoe said, “This too shall pass.” and it shall! This year calls for more kindness, compassion and lots of delicious food!
Eat well, cook happy and love those around you!
Take care,
Sarah
