Happy National Chia Day!!

Happy National Chia Day!!

This mighty little seed is considered a super food and for good reason. It is high in many of the B vitamins, fibre and omega 3. Chia seeds also contains minerals including calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, phosphorus and zinc, all of which are needed for a healthy body. The chia seed can absorb up to 12X its weight in liquid, creating a gelatinous texture. Which is perfect for replacing an egg in a recipe for any vegan friends you may have.

1 egg = 1 tbsp of chia and 3 tbsp of water. Let sit for 10-15 minutes. Use as a normal egg in baking.

Another fantastic use for chia is chia pudding. In a jar combine:

  • coconut milk, or any nut milk (but the coconut milk gives it a nice creamy texture) chia and maple syrup and any other flavours such as cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, spirulina ect. Shake and wait for 10-15 minutes. Feel free to top with cocoa nibs, homemade jam, fresh berries etc!

I hate following a recipe, I am an eyeball it kind of cook. The ratio for coconut milk to chia is about 3:1, 3 tablespoons to 1 cup of liquid, flavour to taste.

I add chia to my homemade granola, (another blog to come on that), to smoothies, dressings and quick breads.

This raw brownie recipe is a fantastic way to sneak in some chia for those picky eaters in the house.

Be creative there are many ways to get these guys into your diet.

Be sure to store your chia in a clean, dry jar in your pantry.
