All in A Good Life

Men and Women are Different Why is Our Health Care Not

On the heels of February, Heart Month. I came across this article about how doctors may have been using the wrong metrics when taking women’s blood pressure. The metrics that are normal for men, which are the current ones being used, may not be normal for women.

Not until now, did I actually really think much of this.

Men and women, are very different and have different needs. Of course, this makes sense.

This is concerning for women because according to the study, the normal range of blood pressure may be too high.

The Importance of Supplements: Why Diet Isn't Enough

I used to believe that we should be able to get all of our body’s nutrients from a well balanced and varied diet. Well, I got schooled on that cute sentiment while learning about nutrition.

I wish we could get all our necessary vitamins and minerals from the food we eat, but that ship sailed along time ago.

We lose 1% of our top and its nutrients annually.

This is a resource that is not renewable, once it’s gone its gone. Soil erosion is just one factor in the depletion of nutrients in our food and we can thank monoculture, pesticide/fungicide and pollution for that.

Unfortunately, our food today is significantly less nutritious.

Super Easy Butternut Squash Soup

During the week there is not much time to cook elaborate meals but we still need to eat well.

Sunday night or Monday morning I drag out the old Instant Pot and that poor thing runs for hours! I cook all of my grains and beans I need for the week so when dinner comes around I just throw a dish together and I don’t have to worry about soaking, or cooking beans or whole grains.

That’s where this recipe came about. I had a butternut squash hanging around and some black beans in the fridge so into the Instant Pot it went, along with half an onion, a couple cloves of garlic and thats about it.

This recipe is delicious, easy to throw together and is healthy enough you can use it on a cleanse.

You can keep it simple or be creative and add your own flare with spices and other additions like avocado, tomatoes, or peppers.

This soup is full of protein, fibre, vitamin A, vitamin C, Potassium, Calcium,. Magnesium and Iron.

If you don’t have an Instant Pot not to worry this can easily be done on the stovetop.

Christmas Treats That Are Good For You

For me, Christmas is all about tradition, family and childhood nostalgia. I really enjoy this time of year when I get to relive some of my most favourite memories as an adult. Christmas is also when I allow myself to indulge in the foods that I don’t normally eat but still enjoy! Eating really well 95% of the time allows me to indulge a bit now and again without too much consequence.

To keep holiday weight gain to a minimum and gastrointestinal issues at bay, see my previous blog for helpful tips to follow throughout Christmas. But, here are a few goodies you can add to your mix that aren’t as rich or sweet but still just as good.

So for all those people who will also participating in holiday eating and drinking here are a few tips to keep in mind, so not to over do it!

  1. Relax and enjoy but don’t overdo anything! Plan to fail, there will be a few more drinks consumed and more cookies eaten in the next few weeks, don’t think you can white knuckle your way through the holidays without indulging, that’s what Christmas is for. But, plan ahead and prepare accordingly.

  2. Prioritize what day/meal/parts of the meal are most important to you and indulge in a small portion. Indulge yes, eat with abandon no.

  3. Limit your alcoholic beverages and offset 1 big glass of water to every alcoholic beverage if alcohol is important to you. If it’s not then forgo it all together because alcohol is really not that great for us, see my previous blog.

  4. Try to keep your whole routine as close to normal as possible, drink your water, do your workouts, prioritize sleep, and continue with your supplements etc

  5. Bring something healthy to the party so you know what is in it and you can trust it’s good for you
