Gardening: How it Can Affect Your Health and Wellness.
As a vegetarian, I take my vegetables very seriously. So when the summer hits you can imagine how happy I am to be eating super fresh and LOCAL fruits and vegetables!
Not much is better than going to your local framers market for fresh produce but, growing your own food is pretty awesome too!
For those of us with no access to the ground and are limited to container gardening there is still lots you can grow. I bought a package of mixed lettuce seeds from one of those temporary stands at Canadian Tire just for fun and I got quite the haul of all kinds of leafs that ranged from kale to arugula, to romaine.
A Few Advantages to Growing Your Own Food:
Growing your own food is totally adaptable to what you want. You determine, how much time you have to commit to it. From a full blown vegetable garden or low maintenance things like lettuce and herbs that practically take no time or effort, it’s totally up to you.
You choose how to grow your food, meaning there are no unwanted herbicides, pesticides or other nasty chemicals on your food and then ultimately in your body.
The nutrients are not lost during transportation from field to grocery store to your plate. You get to eat these lovelies at its’ peak freshness and enjoy all the nutrients not just some of them.
Did you know that vegetables can lose 15-50% of Vitamin C within 1 week of harvest and some spinach can lose 90% within 24hours?
It is thought that most produce loses 30% of nutrients within 3 days of harvest, yikes!
Gardening can be very restorative and help with de-stressing and other ailments such as insomnia, chronic pain and stress management through the therapeutic treatment of grounding or earthing.
Sharing is Caring! I so enjoy giving some of my bounty away for others to enjoy.
Homegrown anything taste 100% better!!
One piece of advice, not everything will work out as you except, it’s all about trail and error and being kind to yourself if you can’t get that basil to grow! God, knows I can’t!! This should be fun and enjoyable not just another thing on your To Do List.
I would love to see all of your bounties! Feel free to share with me pictures of what’s in your garden!
Happy eating and growing!!
