FYI: USA Dairy is Being Sold In Canadian Markets

I know we are all busy and we can’t be on top of everything all the time. That’s the very business model “health food” companies use to get away with selling crap in the name of health food, a huge pet peeve of mine.

Don’t fear that’s why I am here!

I apologize to those who don’t consume dairy, but this is important to know and its not the most exciting topic but impacts your health, I feel I must tell you about it!

So the USMCA deal was put into effect July 1, 2020. It’s a trade deal between US, Mexico and US. Why is this important to nutrition?

Well, part of the deal allows US dairy farmers greater access to the Canadian market, about 3.5% off Canada’s domestic dairy market.

Ok, so what? Well, the US has different regulations and requirements including the use of growth hormones, known as rBGH or rBST.

The used of growth hormones is illegal in Canada and US milk is banned in Europe, mostly because of the use of growth hormones: Just a quick run down on how rBGH can affect animals:

  • The use of these hormones creates more illness:

    • 50% increase in leg/hoof issues or lameness

    • 25% increase in mastitis (udder infections)

    • And many reproductive issues like ovarian tumours, infertility and still births

  • Sick cows are given more antibiotics, which means you get more antibiotics creating intolerances, when you need the antibiotics they may not work

  • The use of growth hormones and the risk to humans is unclear so why risk your health

  • The pasteurization process does not kill these growth hormones so you are ingesting them.

The US is not required to but on their labels the use of growth hormones so it is up to the consumer to know what you are ingesting.

A good rule, if you consume dairy, is to make sure you are buying Canadian dairy. We need to support our fantastic farmers and to ensure you are not getting growth hormones.

Just a heads up, the Fairlife brand of milk that is new in our home and native land is in fact owned by the American Cola-Cola company.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me, I would love to help!
