Christmas Weight Gain Can Avoided

Christmas Weight Gain Can Avoided

I admit it, I enjoy Christmas and everything about it. The time away from the day to day, the lights, the Christmas carols, Christmas movies and of course the food. I eat pretty strictly normally but when Christmas rolls around, I am not as strict. For me, it is the one time of the year where I can let loose a bit and give in to nostalgia and more sugar than I normally eat. This blog originated after a particularly regrettable evening where I consumed too many rum balls. My stomach hurt and I couldn’t sleep, but it was my own doing. If I am capable of over doing it, I know there are others that may need some pointers, because I, had to go through them with myself after the Rum Ball incident. Here are a few things to keep in mind during this wonderfully festive season!

  • This is not new but, drink your water. Consuming extra salt, sugar, fats, alcohol etc will definitely have both your kidneys and liver needing more water to filter out toxins

  • Keep your non festive meals as normal as possible. This will help with both good digestion, to make up for nutrient deficiencies and to keep from over consuming sweets and other goodies.

  • When you are enjoying yourselves at parties or meals, be present and really enjoy your food. Eat with all 5 senses, eat slowly and stop beating yourself up about it.

  • Ask yourself if you are really hungry or are you reaching for a cookie out of stress, emotion, boredom or to please a family member. Eat only when you are hungry.

  • Stop, no matter what, when you are 75-80% full, a poor diet is saved by moderation.

  • Pick of your favourite foods, there is no need to eat all of Gramma’s sweet tray.

  • Limit your alcohol consumption to a couple for the evening. Be strategic, if you really want wine at dinner forgo the cocktail before hand.

  • Eat as many vegetables as possible, and try to stay away from those creamy broccoli casseroles. Offer to bring something healthy that you enjoy.

Ok, so if have over indulged. Here are a few tips:

  • Water is your friend

  • Ginger tea can be soothing

  • Digestive enzymes can help with digestion

  • Take it easy on your stomach the following meal

  • Get back on tract the following day
